Space Building: Medellín, Colombia

The "Space" is a 20th floor building which collapsed in 2013 in Medellin, Colombia. The building collapsed just after the construction ended and before being occupied for owners. The main structure's lateral resistant system was reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Medellin is the second city of Colombia, and it is located in Los Andes montains, a region of high seismicity, however the collapse of the building occured in a day with no substantial earthquake reports neither highwinds or rainfalls.

Three different companies were incharge of the forense study for explaining causes of the collapse. Two of them were national (Colombian) and one from United States. Conclusions of all studies show that the building did not met basic requeriments of the national construction code.
